On Saturday, April 13th, April Porter of Wilmington, a Habitat homeowner of 20 years, paid off her mortgage. In congratulatory tradition, Habitat for Humanity held a ceremonial mortgage burning at her home that was attended by family, friends, and Habitat staff and board members. This is an important realization for any property owner but especially notable for a Habitat homeowner.
With over 300 families helped, Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County has helped low-income families since 1986. They are among the top three affiliates of Habitat for Humanity International in the northeast. Through their proven approach and with the benefits of empowerment and stability through home ownership, Habitat helps families break the cycle of poverty, as well as build homes and communities.
