Yesterday, I attended a press event to mark the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarding the Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) over $18 million in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) Funds. Needless to say, this has a tremendous impact on the City of Wilmington, the State of Delaware and affordable housing in Delaware.
Around $5.2 million of the funds will be renovating approximately 300 units around the City of Wilmington, many of which have been vacant for a prolonged time.
Approximately $13.6 million will be used towards the Lincoln Towers and Southbridge communities and will emphasize green construction and energy efficiency.
The Wilmington Housing Authority is also in the process of applying to HUD for Hope VI grant funds to help the Riverside community.
In addition to providing much needed housing, these opportunities will create countless jobs in the City of Wilmington.
It is hard to imagine the City of Wilmington in the next few years when the construction is done and all these new/newly renovated homes are occupied by families.
